Out of refills? Can't reach your doctor?

Run out before you can reach your prescriber? Our pharmacists can extend, renew, or adapt your prescription so you don't go without. We just need a copy of — or reference to — your original Rx: if you're our patient it's likely on file; if not, bring in your vial or send a clear photo of the label. Whether we can renew, and whether it's done by phone, is always up to the pharmacist's discretion.

Yes — a pharmacist in Ontario can renew (extend) most prescriptions without a doctor, so you're never left without your medication. At St. Clair Drug Mart, if you're out of refills and your doctor's office is closed, unreachable, or booking weeks out, our pharmacist can independently renew your prescription for continuity of care while you wait for an appointment. Pharmacists can also adapt an existing prescription — adjusting the dose, dosage form, or regimen to better suit you — without needing to contact your doctor first.

Who Qualifies

You must already be established on the medication — taking it safely and effectively on an ongoing basis. Renewals are for continuity of an existing, stable therapy, not for starting something new or treating a new condition.

Stable, ongoing therapy only
🔍
What Our Pharmacist Reviews

We confirm the medication has been well-tolerated, safe, and effective for you, weigh the risks and benefits of continuing without a new doctor's visit, and make sure a renewal is in your best interest before authorizing it.

💳
Pay

This isn't an OHIP-covered service, so there's a fee — $15 for the assessment and renewal, confirmed with you before we charge anything. We'll give you a receipt you can submit to your extended health / drug benefit plan — coverage of pharmacist clinical service fees varies by plan, so check with your provider.

$15 fee · Receipt provided for your insurer

Yes — a pharmacist in Ontario can prescribe smoking cessation medication. At St. Clair Drug Mart, our pharmacist can assess your situation, prescribe all first-line quit therapies, and support you through the full journey — no doctor's referral, no wait list, no judgment.

⏱️ What happens to your body when you quit

Heart rate and blood pressure drop back to normal levels, and carbon monoxide in your blood returns to normal — more oxygen reaches your organs

2 weeks

Circulation improves and lung function increases by up to 30%

1 month

Coughing and shortness of breath decrease — your cilia start clearing the lungs

1–5 yrs

Heart attack risk drops to half that of a smoker by year 1, and stroke risk falls to a never-smoker's level by year 5

10–15 yrs

Lung cancer risk is half that of someone still smoking by year 10, and heart disease risk matches a lifetime non-smoker's by year 15

💊 Treatment Options We Can Prescribe
🩹
Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)

Patches, gum, lozenges, oral inhaler, and mouth spray (Nicorette, Zonnic, and similar) — available over-the-counter with pharmacist guidance, no doctor's visit needed. ODB doesn't cover NRT directly, but some private plans do.

First-line · OTC · Some private insurers may cover
💊
Varenicline (Champix)

The most effective single prescription therapy for quitting. Varenicline reduces the satisfaction from smoking while easing withdrawal — so cigarettes simply become less rewarding. Our pharmacist can prescribe this directly, without a doctor's visit.

Most effective · Rx required · Pharmacist can prescribe
🔵
Bupropion (Zyban)

An antidepressant that also significantly reduces nicotine cravings and withdrawal. A strong option if you have a history of depression or anxiety alongside your smoking, or if varenicline isn't right for you. Our pharmacist can prescribe this too.

Rx required · Also supports mood · Pharmacist can prescribe
🔗
Combination Therapy

Pairing a long-acting nicotine patch with a faster-acting form (gum or lozenge) — or combining NRT with a prescription medication — is significantly more effective than any single approach alone. Your pharmacist will recommend what combination makes sense for you.

Highest success rates · Tailored to you
📋 What Happens at Your Consultation
1
Smoking history & triggers

We review how long you've smoked, how much, what situations or emotions trigger the urge — and whether you've tried to quit before. No judgment — this just helps us tailor a plan that actually fits your life.

2
Set a quit date together

Research consistently shows that committing to a specific quit date — within 2 weeks — significantly improves success. We help you pick one and start medication before that day so it's working by the time you stop.

3
Personalized treatment plan

Based on your history, other medications, and preferences, we prescribe or recommend the right combination of NRT and/or prescription therapy. We also walk through how to handle cravings and what to expect in the first week.

4
Follow-up & ongoing support

We check in at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months. If cravings are difficult, side effects arise, or you need to adjust your plan, we're here. Relapse is common — it's part of the process, not a failure.

We practice patient-centred care — building real relationships with our patients, taking time to listen, explain, and ensure every person leaves with the information and medication they need to thrive.
